This Juneteenth celebration I was happy to combine my Gemini powers and and share with friends and followers my passion for DJ’ing music. A pastime freelance career I enjoyed actively pursuing for ten years prior to traveling to teach overseas.
I wanted to honor this Juneteenth by presenting a special mix featuring black artists and music inspired by black artists. I’ve used music from so many great ones in my yoga videos. Black music artists have been a big part of my life’s soundtrack to experience some of the best moments and also to cope with some sorrow times. I played a two hour set of uplifting reggae, funk, soul, hip hop, Afrobeat and more! Feel free to check out my Spotify playlist:
Together we enjoyed and danced to an Instagram livestream feed. I also asked for birthday donations (celebrating my bday June 13) and generate funds to support a necessary cause. Collectively in two hours we generated over $440! which went towards @colorofchange, a great organization that is powering the movement to help end police brutality against black lives. Thanks to everyone who joined and contributed. It felt empowering for me to hold a virtual space in this way and raise some awareness around Juneteenth.
Below is a slideshow from (So You Want To Talk About) explaining some history about this day.
